El Modena Finalists pose with their awards

Every spring, students compete for their chance to participate in the California High School Speech Association (CHSSA) tournament.

On Feburaryb 19-20, El Modena High School hosted the Orange County Speech League State Qualifiers for individual events.  This tournament included just speech events.  Students from all across the county compete for the top spots.  The top three or four people in each event qualify for the state competition.

Four people from El Modena qualified to go to the state competitions.  Junior Amanda Remy, who has now been competing for three years, qualified in four events: Humorous, Duo, Dramatic, and Thematic Interpretation.  Junior Katie Cunningham also qualified in Dramatic, Duo, and Thematic Interpretation.

For El Mo students who did not place in the top four for their events, the numbers are not set in stone.  Because students can only compete at the state competition in one individual event, spots are likely to open.  El Modena may see more students compete this year.

Qualifiers for debate events – Public Forum, Policy, and Lincoln-Douglas – will take place next weekend.  The team has their fingers crossed to see who will represent El Modena in Debate.
