In 2014, the El Modena Marching Band and Color Guard hosted the first SCJA preliminary competition at Fred Kelly, which not only brought in funds for the band, but also connected El Mo with many other schools. Also, those who volunteered to help for the all day event received service hours for their effort and contributions.

This year, the band is hosting and competing in prelims again on November 14th, which is no ordinary feat. Around forty bands belonging to different divisions (sizes) will come and compete for awards. Members of band and guard sign up for different shifts and roles in order to help pull the momentous event together.

Leaders guide various bands around the campus of El Mo to their specific warm up locations as well as to and from the field where they will perform their shows. There are assistants that aid in parking buses and trailers for the bands that come. Also, those who help orchestrate prelims, such highly involved parents and students, even arrange for vendors to come and sell food and products to attendees. As one can imagine, this brings in major revenue which will help the band pay for necessary equipment, instruments, music, etc.

The significance of prelims lies in the fact that it is the semifinals competition for the El Modena Marching Band and Color Guard. Their place will determine whether or not they compete in championships.

This event is  impossible without the support of parents and volunteers alike. Hopefully, the funds brought in will benefit the band. If you are interested in gaining service hours or simply supporting the band and color guard, please go to elmobandandguard.com to sign-up to help with this year’s prelims.
