A sonic screwdriver.  A distant planet.  A loyal companion.  A madman in a box.

These all mark the return of the Doctor, the hero of the BBC television show Doctor Who.  Since the show’s revival in 2005, 5 different actors have played the Doctor, an alien who can travel anywhere in time and space with his time machine, which he calls the TARDIS.

The ninth season of the show premiered on Saturday, September 19, following the release of a ten-minute prequel.  The premier episode, titled “The Magician’s Apprentice,” starred Peter Capaldi as the twelfth regeneration of the doctor and Jenna Coleman as Clara, his lively, loyal companion.

So far, it looks like season nine will continue to have Capaldi be one of the darker Doctors.  His jokes often feature more dark humor than those of his predecessors, such as David Tennant and Matt Smith.  He also seems to focus on more dismal themes.

The new season features the return of Missy (Michelle Gomez), the Doctor’s long-time archenemy.  He also faces Davros (Julian Bleach), the creator of the Daleks, a species of ruthless alien soldiers.

So, what can we expect for season nine?  The season will have six two-part episodes and one Christmas special, adding up to thirteen episodes total.  Beloved characters are set to return, including Alex Kingston as River Song and Ingrid Oliver as Osgood.  The show will occur in various settings, from Earth to distant spaceships.

Unfortunately, Jenna Coleman will not return as Clara after the ninth season.  “I have left the TARDIS,” she told BBC1 radio.  Although she will be missed, fans cannot wait to discover who the Doctor’s next companion will be.

We can anticipate an exciting future (and past, and present) for the Doctor this season.  With aliens, spaceships, and a TARDIS, anything can happen.
