The Modern Civil Rights Frontier

Civil rights are still an issue, far past the Civil Rights Movement

The United States of America has undoubtedly pictured itself as a culturally, socially, politically and economically modern country that has been the forerunner of Western thinking in the world. We are the self-proclaimed “city on a hill,” shining brightly for the rest of the world to follow.

While it is true that we have certainly blazed the modernization trail for the entire world, we must realize that we still are cluttered with lessons and issues still needing to be addressed. One specifically being civil rights.

Although the idea presides in our minds that our country is dedicated and focused to the endeavor of “equality and justice for all,” there still remains a shocking amount of inequality and injustice taking place within our borders.

One of the most predominant examples, of course, are the issues that have sprung up from areas such as Ferguson, Missouri that demonstrate the pressing issue regarding institutionalized racism that still shows itself as evident throughout our country.

Although the civil rights movement that took place nearly 60 years ago brought tremendous freedom, that freedom still remains limited to this day. Today we still see an incredible amount of racial profiling, racial bias and racial discrimination towards minority races.

This is a fact that not many Americans like to believe, regardless of just how real it is for those specific races. To believe that we live in a post-racial society is to be ignorant to any and all modern news.

Another prolific area in modern-day civil rights issues concerns the area of discrimination against sexual orientations and preferred identities. Members of the LGBTQ+ community deal with severe discrimination, and regardless of religious or cultural opinion, are consistently denied the simple things that individuals outside that community are granted.

One recent event in this specific discrimination is the “Religious Freedom” bill that was recently passed in Indiana, which legalizes nearly any discrimination against any individual who exhibits an opposition to a person’s religious beliefs. This act luckily backfired and triggered a negative reaction throughout the nation.

However advanced we see ourselves, we must come to terms with the fact that we still have quite a long way to go, especially as new social issues arise. No matter what our beliefs are, we must place a higher importance on the safety and freedom of our diverse citizens.
