Mandatory Water Restrictions in California

Drought in California

Drought in California

Jerry Brown, California’s Governor, announced on Wednesday that there was now a mandatory water restriction which would be place in action for the first time ever in California history.

The state’s four year drought had reached a near crisis after this winters record low snowfalls. Brown directed the State Water Resources Control Board to impose a “25 percent reduction on the state’s 400 local water supply agencies, which serve 90 percent of California residents, over the coming year.”

Not only are households going to be restricted, but also businesses and farms. People who own large farms wont fall under  the category of the 25 percent guideline f they receive their water from outside the state.

It’s predicted that because of the restrictions on water, prices of farming goods might increase in the near future.

If households and businesses go over the 25 percent limit, they will get taxed and have to pay the difference for what they use.

To help reduce water use in your household, here are a few quick tips!

1. Use sprinklers at night

2. Place cups or buckets under leaks and reuse that water for plants

3. reduce showers to 5-10 mins

4. When doing laundry, limit to only once a week
