Boko Haram is a militant Islamic extremist group that has been terrorizing Nigeria for over a decade. Their name “Boko Haram” translates to “Western education is forbidden,” and the terrorist group’s main agenda to is to eradicate anything related to Western society; this includes voting and secular education.

Boko Haram was responsible for abducting the 200 Nigerian schoolgirls in 2014, which started the #BringBackOurGirls trend on Twitter. There are countless other tragedies committed by the group, but their most recent attack may possibly be the worst.

Starting on January 3rd of this year, Boko Haram began raiding villages in Northern Nigeria, continuing for days. With a total of 16 villages attacked, around 2,000 people are feared to be dead. In addition, about 30,000 people were displaced; that means in one raid 40,000 people were affected, not including their grieving family and friends who lived elsewhere.

There is absolutely no regard for life, as too many are being lost. Amnesty International released a statement saying “The attack on Baga and surrounding towns looks as if it could be Boko Haram’s deadliest act.” And unless the terror group is stopped, it will continue to gain power and pride, resulting in even more atrocities being committed.
