El Modena’s Hygiene Drive

Coming Together to Support a Great Cause

From November 1st to November 30th, El Modena’s Journalism hosted a hygiene drive on our campus. Individually packaged hygiene items were collected in boxes that were distributed to different classrooms throughout the school. Some of the most commonly donated items included toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant.

Different methods were used to incentivize students to participate in this drive. The class with the most donations -in this case, the junior class- was provided with points that go towards spirit week. In addition, Mrs. Chertock provided students one “star” for every five items donated. These stars work as homework passes or extra credit for students.

The items that students donated are going to the Orange County Rescue Mission, an organization dedicated to supporting previously homeless people in Orange County. They do this by providing shelter, food, and job training and instilling residents with self sufficiency and life skills.

Overall, the hygiene drive was a great success. Hundreds of items were donated and students in all four grades participated in the drive. Our students’ willingness to contribute items to a worthy cause demonstrated our altruism and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
