The 106th season of operation for the NHL officially started on October 7, 2022. Prior to this season, the league held preseason games in Europe for the first time since 2019 with the Nashville Predators playing SC Bern at the PostFinance Arena in Bern, Switzerland on October 3, 2022 and the San Jose Sharks playing Eisbären Berlin at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, Germany on October 4, 2022.
There are some new changes in teams, with the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks gaining new general managers Chris MacFarland and Mike Grier, respectively. The league has changed sponsorship rules as well, so along with the helmet sponsor placements, teams can now sell sponsor slots on their jerseys. This means we will be seeing lots of advertisements for Dairy Farmers of Ontario, Circa Las Vegas, Safelite, and Gilda River Resort and Casino.
This year’s season began with an international regular season game for the first time since 2019 with the Nashville Predators playing the San Jose Sharks on October 7 and 8 in Prague, Czech Republic. The next international game will be held November 4 and 5 in Tampere, Finland with the Columbus Blue Jackets playing the Colorado Avalanche.
