Forbidden Knowledge

Should Books Be Banned in Schools? The restriction of knowledge aka the banning of books, has once again become a controversial topic in the United States in 2022. A few of the most commonly banned or challenged books from the past decades are Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. Books are banned or challenged for a number of reasons such as inappropriate sensuality, usage of drugs/alcohol consumption, and inappropriate language for certain age groups. Although these reasons are all valid in specific circumstances, keeping children and teenagers from reading classics isn’t justified because these books teach valuable lessons about history, society, and culture. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is one of the most banned/challenged books ever, yet the lessons it teaches about courage, equality, and the realities of life are incredibly valuable for everyone to learn. Although this books contains racial slurs and focuses on an allegation of rape, the overarching values that everyone is equal and not judging a book by its cover outweight the supposed inappropriateness. As the banning of books continues in schools, children and teens are being kept from learning valuable life lessons and witnessing important parts of our country’s past.
