West Side Story

A Look into the Newest Adaption of this Classic Story

West Side Story is a classic Romeo and Juliet story that takes place in 1950s New York City as two gangs battle for control over turf. The situation grows complicated when a gang member falls passionately in love with their rival’s sister.

The 1961 film adaptation of West Side Story directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins marks history for winning ten Academy Awards including Best Picture. Few films have won as many awards as the 1961 adaptation but critics believe the 2021 adaptation of West Side Story also has a shot at winning an Oscar.

In 2014 Steven Spielberg, director of various films including Jaws and E.T., announced he would be remaking this six-decade-old movie which was released on December 10, 2021.

Spielberg believes the cast will set this film apart from others due to the mixture of established stars and up-and-coming actors. The film also features Rita Moreno, who won an award for her original role in the 1961 West Side Story
