Vanguards Take On NYC
Superheroes Fight Their Way to the El Modena Dancefloor
It’s a bird! It’s a plane? All good guesses, but it was El Modena’s first Homecoming dance after two awaited years! The dance theme was “Spiderman Homecoming,” which marvelously transformed the flagpole area outside the gym into Peter Parker’s playground.
Lights galore wrapped along the breezeway and above the food and drinks area. Spiderman inspired posters were hung all throughout the dance, there were hints of graffiti art by the DJ’s stage, and a Spiderman prop protected our Vanguards from any DC Comics danger!
Entertainment for the Vanguard Nation was endless. A section of the breezeway was dedicated to iconic game machines that included Pacman, Donkey Kong, Galaga, and Dig Dug. The entertainment center also had air hockey tables set up for the more competitive Vanguards. And what’s entertainment without music?
The DJ had music ranging from “I Love It” by Icona Pop, “Payaso del Rodeo” by Caballo Dorado, and “It’s Been a Long, Long Time” by Kitty Kallen. Music unconsciously makes Vanguards of all backgrounds feel one. We drop all our disputes to sprint to the dancefloor when we hear “our song.”
El Modena students dress up, then leave covered in sweat because of their, at times, dorky dance moves. That leaves some students wondering if Homecoming is really worth it. And yes, the answer is always yes.
Not being familiar with faces may be intimidating, or you may not breakdance like the Vanguard Dance Company. Regardless of any feeling of hesitance, let the dance dissipate it. Let the fact that you took the opportunity to experience life take over.
You are a hero for yourself and others when you choose to be a part of the Vanguard Nation, and memories as infinite as Homecoming prove it every single time. Frontline hopes all of El Modena’s heroes had a super Homecoming!
