2020 Major League Baseball Realigned Divisions

What the 2020 MLB season could look like if the divisions were realigned

COVID-19 has caused so many aspects of our lives to change including pro sports like Major League Baseball. This pandemic has caused Major League Baseball to delay its season which was supposed to start on March 26th and we have no idea when the season will begin. This proposed idea of realigned divisions would completely eliminate the traditional American and National Leagues for 2020 in an abbreviated season.

The plan would have all 30 teams return to their spring training sites in Florida and Arizona, playing regular season games only in those two states and without fans in an effort to reduce travel and minimize risks in the midst of this pandemic. The divisions would be realigned based on the geography of their spring training stadiums. This plan will allow teams to have three weeks of training which includes exhibition games, before opening the regular season and playing the schedule with whole different divisional opponents.

The plan would have the Castus and Grapefruit league with three divisions in each. The grapefruit league would include the North, South, and East divisions and the Cactus league would involve the NorthEast, West, and NorthWest divisions. The teams headlining those divisions would include the New York Yankees in the North, Boston Red Sox in the South, Washington Nationals in the East, Chicago Cubs in the NorthEast, Los Angeles Dodgers in the West, and Milwaukee Brewers in the NorthWest.

The teams playing in Arizona will have more flexibility considering they are all within one hour drives of each other. The Florida- Arizona plan has several advantages including allowing to establish themselves in facilities they are comfortable with. There would also be three domed major league stadiums they could use which are Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Marlins Park in Miami, and Chase Field in Phoenix.

The playoffs could include division winners and wild card teams or a postseason tournament with all 30 teams. The winner of the Grapefruit league would play the winner of the Cactus league in the World Series using domed stadiums sometime in November. Nothing has been officially confirmed by the league and this is just an idea at the moment but this would make baseball so much different for the 2020 season and would be a fun safe way of bringing baseball back as soon as possible.
