An Update on What’s Happening and What Has Happened

So what’s really going on? A recap of all the current updates on school closures and plans for the year

On April 1st, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that schools are to remain closed until the end of the academic school year, yet that is no where near answering all of the questions that people may have.

Concerning the Class of 2020, what is to happen with Prom? Grad Night? Senior week? Graduation? All of these topics have been handled via an April 10 post from Mrs. Katevas on the El Modena website.

In short, a traditional prom is out of the question. Plans for an on-campus prom-like event has been tentatively scheduled for July. Grad night could still be a reality, just later in the summer. Any senior week activity has been cancelled. Instead there is a plan to have a senior pancake breakfast later in the summer months.

There are still plans to uphold the June 11 date for a traditional graduation, which is best case scenario. Alternatively, only students and faculty will be allowed to the ceremony if physical distancing guidelines indicate that it will be safe, which will be live-streamed to the masses. If neither of those situations are a reality, there will be a virtual graduation on June 11. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to pick up diplomas through a “drive through” system. Then, on July 22 and 23, there will be a traditional ceremony at Fred Kelly Stadium.

As for distance learning plans, there has been a new schedule implemented for teachers to be able to check in with their students at appropriate times and to avoid conflicting Google Meets.

If students need to contact their counselors, they may join the Counseling Distance Learning Page on Google Classroom with the access code 5z43nd5.

The El Modena Education Foundation announced on April 13 that they will be providing each graduating senior with a complimentary Graduation Announcement yard sign.

All of these plans are subject to change depending on how the situation progresses. To stay updated, follow all of the official El Modena social medias @elmodenahs on Twitter and Instagram, and continue checking the El Modena website for updates.
