The El Modena Vanguards, along with Canyon, Villa Park, and Orange, will not be playing their home games at Fred Kelly this season due to the construction of the district’s new football stadium. Fred Kelly should be completed by the 2020 football season and will be a great site to watch the Vanguards play.

For reasons dealing with ADA compliance, age, and necessary upgrades to the locker rooms, Fred Kelly stadium is being reconstructed and won’t be able to be used this year. El Modena will play their home football games at Segerstrom High School this season. El Modena’s track and field competitions will also not be held at Fred Kelly. When discussing not playing at Fred Kelly this year, senior quarterback Nate Lomeli said, “It sucks not having our home field.’’

At least it doesn’t appear to be affecting the team, because they have started the season 4-1 with three straight dominating performances against Fullerton, El Dorado, and Marina. We once again asked quarterback Nate Lomeli if not playing at home has affected the teams play, he stated, “No that doesn’t have to do with anything, we all play on the same field together.”

El Modena has five games left remaining on their schedule, two of which will be played at Segerstrom. El Modena will end the regular season on Halloween night against the rival Villa Park Spartans. The team will look to go to 5-1 and improve the win streak to four games as they face Esperanza on the 4th of October. The El Modena fans have still shown up and shown out, even with not being on the home turf, which shows their dedication to the team.

Fred Kelly has been the home for El Modena football games for the past 50 years, so it has so many incredible memories, and once the stadium is complete many athletes will continue to have success. Students will make new memories at the improved Fred Kelly and future players will have an amazing new stadium to play at. Future friday nights at El Modena will be electric in the new Fred Kelly stadium.
