“Operation Varsity Blues”

“Operation Varsity Blues”

April 10, 2019

In early March, the FBI revealed the details of a case they called “Operation Varsity Blues,” a case in which many wealthy individuals and celebrities such as actress Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman managed to bribe sports coaches and SAT proctors in order to get their kids an easy way into whatever prestigious school they desired. What better way to ease the mind of students during the month of college acceptance and rejection?

Thirty-three parents were charged with being involved in the scheme, which is said to have run from 2011 to 2019. According to the US attorney for the District of Massachusetts, the major ring leader for this scam was the owner of a “college counseling service” called Key Worldwide Foundation who had accepted a total of $25 million from parents within this time period.

The worst part about all of this, however, is what Laughlin and Huffman contributed to this scam. These celebrity parents bribed coaches $400,000 and up to get their children into schools like USC through sports such as sailing, soccer, and competitive crew. Laughlin’s own YouTube famous daughter recorded herself saying “I don’t know how much of school I’m gonna attend… but I do want the experience of, like, game days, partying.”

Thousands upon thousands of kids have worked incredibly hard their entire lives to get to a point where prestigious private colleges would consider accepting them, and even then the back of their mind would be melting at the thought of how much student loan debt they would encounter. But for these obscenely wealthy parents whose kids have no work ethic, no desire, and no reason to want to go to college, all it takes is a little bit of money.
