Healthy alternatives to unhealthy fall foods
October 18, 2018
1. Fall breads (pumpkin bread, banana bread, zucchini, etc): Instead of buying big loaves of bread at the grocery store filled with unhealthy ingredients and preservatives, you can bake them at home and use whole-wheat flour and control the fat and sugar content by adding more fruit.
2. Caramel corn/Kettle corn: For a less sugary seasonal snack, mix some air-popped corn with apple or pumpkin pie spice to reduce sugar and fat. Or if you don’t feel like going through the trouble of making your own snack, there are plenty of other options like Skinny Pop available at a variety of stores.
3. Halloween Candy: Rather than giving yourself or kids a stomach ache and some cavities try giving out some snacks that are just as good and much healthier alternatives (i.e. Goldfish, pretzels, granola bars, cheese sticks, crackers, yogurt Raisins, pumpkin seeds, Rice Krispy treats).
4. Tailgate foods (hamburgers, hot dogs, and dips): With the playoffs and many other sporting events coming up, tailgating is bound to be rampant. However many of these foods are loaded with fats and many tailgaters aren’t too hot on eating an entire meal of vegetables. Some healthy swaps include making burgers with whole-wheat buns, using reduced-fat cheese, and cooking lean meats such as ground turkey or sirloin.
