El Modena Varsity Softball a tight-knit family of young girls who have has been battling all season and has a good chance of winning League Finals and making it to CIF.
At the moment, the girls hold an overall record of 12-13. Then their league record being 2-2.
Coach Robert Calderon has been coaching at El Modena for six years, four of those he has been the assistant for the varsity baseball team. This year is his second year being the head varsity coach for softball.
After a hard season last year, Coach Calderon’s expectation for this season was to make CIF. With two more games to go, the team has a very good chance of making it this year to CIF.
Though the team has a good, chance Coach Calderon describes the team as a, “roller coaster,” with a lot of “High of highs and lows of lows.” He hopes for the team to stay at their high and to be able to compete with better schools, such as Mater Dei High school.
Being a tight-knit team a strength the girls hold would be, “having each other’s backs and to focus on picking each other up when something goes wrong,” said senior Emily Wagenbrenner. In a team sport, it is very important to have the each other’s backs and senior Aspen Kyles agrees that, “When something goes bad, it sometimes carries on to something, but we are usually good at picking each other up and carrying on with the game.”
