Senior Nicholas Tucker has recently found himself among the top 1.25% of all PSAT test takers, having been named an NMSQT semifinalist for the scores he received following his testing. Though Tucker did not expect such an honor, it was clearly very well deserved.

Frontline: What was your reaction to being named a semifinalist for the NMSQT this year?

Nicholas Tucker: “I was very surprised. Moreso that I was the only person to be a finalist. I know I did fairly well on the PSAT but I knew other people did well in addition to me. I didn’t know this was a thing beforehand, I got called into the office, and they just dropped the news on me. It certainly was a surprise.”

FL: Going into the test last year, how did you prepare?

NT: “I didn’t really prepare. I just had this confidence in my knowledge and I took the test just like I would any other.”

FL: What advice would you give to those taking the P/SAT in the upcoming years?

NT: “I would say to not worry about it too much. If you’ve been keeping up with your classes, doing homework and paying attention, you will have accumulated a wealth of knowledge already. As long as you are confident that you know your stuff, then you should do fine.”

FL: What is the most exciting part about being recognized for your academic achievements on such a grand scale?

NT: “The prospect of moving on and potentially getting scholarship money is pretty exciting. Also, it’s another way to stand out on college applications, another thing to add to the list.”
