Each year, a summer program known as ALA Girls State takes place. Schools across the country nominate junior girls who they feel exhibit exemplary leadership skills, and above average academic achievement. This year, El Modena nominated juniors Kayla Miles, Julia Holland, Ashley Ramynke, and Julianna Janes.

Last November, the nominees were interviewed, and within forty minutes following, the delegate and alternate were announced. The delegate is Kayla Miles, and her alternative if she cannot attend is Ashley Ramynke. When she found out, Miles stated that she was “completely shocked,” considering how the other girls were involved in school.

In a little over a month, Miles will spend a fully paid for week at Claremont College, learning the basics of the government. The students put together a mock-government, each taking part in a specific role, and also campaigning in their own political parties. Even more impressively, before Miles even gets to Claremont, she must formulate her own bill, which will be discussed at the event.

Being selected as the El Modena Girls State delegate is certainly an honor, and Miles is a perfect fit for this opportunity. It will be exciting to see what Miles does the future, she is setting down a very strong educational foundation.
