The aroma of hairspray, blinding lights, and twirling costumes can only mean one thing—the El Modena Dance Showcase is just around the corner. The yearly event showcases dance routines performed throughout the 2016-2017 school year at assemblies and competitions, and features projects on the art of dance composition.

The production of thirty dances, ranging from contemporary solos to large hip hop numbers, proves critical to the dance program, not only as a fundraiser, but as a way to illuminate the development of the team throughout the year, and to commemorate the graduating seniors.

Senior and assistant director Jenna Babbitt says, “it really shows how much everyone supports each other on the team. When groups show their pieces everyone cheers them on, gives encouragements, and compliments each other’s creativity.”

Captains Alyssa Farnsworth (11), Stela Martinez (11), Troy Nishimoto (10), and guest choreographers Abby Formanowicz, Erik Sandoval, Kristin Santiago, and Makenna Snow, under the direction of Ms. Turner, inspire students to create dances that differ in era, style, and manipulation of choreography and music. The showcase will feature a variety of dances, including a 50s hip hop debut performed by Julia Atkinson (10) and Israel Rios (11), and an African and Bollywood group number performed by select students from Ms. Turner’s Professional Dance classes.

Tickets for the 2016-2017 El Modena Dance Showcase on May 18th and 19th are available in room 807.
