Recently, people have been questioning why politics should be brought into events like award shows and fashion shows. They argue that these venues are no place for politics; But they’re wrong. Fashion is influenced by all sorts of people, from every background, and they are people with opinions who also hold influence. From designers Vivienne Westwood and Katharine Hamnett who pioneered the political slogan t-shirt, to entire collections having references to current events, politics have been relevant in fashion culture for decades.

Fashion is an example of how art can can comment on current issues. In Britain two years ago, it was the anti-Brexit message (it was mentioned recently at New York Fashion Week 2017, as well). Today in the United States, it is women’s issues, immigrant policy issues, and more.

At New York Fashion Week this past February, pink buttons saying “Fashion Stands with Planned Parenthood” were gracing the runway thanks to a collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Planned Parenthood. Many of the designers at the show shaped their presentations around social and political awareness to go along as well. Many featured slogan shirts with feminist statements and quotes of speeches from Susan B. Anthony. Another designer had his workers wearing a t-shirt he designed with “OUR VOICE IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL PROTECT US” with the backs listing every Senate representative’s phone number

Artists are known to put their opinions in pieces whether they be photographers, painters, actors, comedians, or fashion designers. With the last two years being at a very intense political climate, many are speaking up more than ever.
