We have all heard the saying, “giving is better than receiving.” But what does that really mean?

This idea constantly comes up, especially during this time of the year. Everyone has expectations of things they want to receive, and so often forget to think about what other people want. Trying to think of others before oneself goes against human nature, but, why should you worry about others, and not yourself? After all, isn’t that what Christmas is about, getting gifts from other people?

If we, as a collective, dropped our expectations of people giving things to us, the holidays would be a much more enjoyable experience. I can recall countless times as a kid, where I wanted something specific, but didn’t get it. Those feelings of disappointment could be so easily avoided if there were no expectations in the first place. Some people feel apprehensive around the holidays because they are worried they won’t find the right gift for the people in their life. Isn’t that sad? There is so much pressure put on people, whether directly or indirectly, to get that perfect gift.

But what is that perfect gift? The newest device? That sweet new video game? Those earrings she really wants? No. The perfect gift is one that cannot be bought. Being there for your family and friends, and letting them know that you are so appreciative that they are in your life. That is a priceless gift, it is not that hard to give, yet so often is hardly given. Give the gift of love this holiday season.
