Two members of the El Modena boys’ varsity volleyball team, senior and setter, Kyle Nyguyen and middle blocker, Seth Watkins, were honored with the awards of valedictorian and salutatorian for their class of 2017.

Each of them had their own struggles with balancing their grades and the game, but managed to do so and go beyond the requirements. Frontline staff got the chance to interview each of the incredible students and what it took to get to where they are.

Frontline: Describe how you balanced your school work and volleyball.

Kyle Nyguyen: “I do all my homework at school so I don’t have to worry about it at home or during practice.”

Seth Watkins: “I just make sure I don’t waste time on anything and get my work done as soon as possible so I have time for everything in my day.”

FL: How do you apply your knowledge to the game?

KN: “It’s more instinctual but as captain and setter, I need to come up with strategies to get out of rough spots as well as knowing who to set.”

SW: “You have to know where to put the ball in certain situations to throw the other team off guard as well as when to give a full swing hitting versus when is a good time to tip.”
